From Cheech & Chong, to Dazed and Confused, to Pineapple Express, the stoner movement has developed more than its fair share of inside jokes and made-up words. These phrases are lasting and truly precious gems — the fruits of stupidly stoned giggle-fits shared between generations of potheads in smokey basements or secluded forest clearings. They range from the practical to the absurd and are often considered to be key components in any stoner or DEA agent’s vocabulary.
Here is a list of all the common stoner terms and phrases listed in the open-source cannabis dictionary.
Adult-Use
Legal cannabis not designated for medical purposes is often called recreational or adult-use cannabis. Recreational users consume cannabis for a pleasurable altered state of consciousness, similar to the use of alcohol or tobacco. Laws for recreational and adult-use often vary from state to state, and in some cases, they can vary between cities.
“The weed I buy is considered adult use, but I’m thinking of getting a medical recommendation.”
Amendment 64
The Colorado Marijuana Legalization Amendment, also known as Amendment 64, was on the November 2012 ballot in Colorado, and it successfully legalized cannabis from 2014 onward. The measure specifies that anyone over the age of 21 can possess up to one ounce of cannabis and that the state will regulate the industry by enacting taxes and legislation governing the cultivation and processing of cannabis manufacturing and retail facilities. Due to Amendment 64, Colorado became one of the first states to legalize cannabis for recreational use.
“Amendment 64 helped pave the way for people to look at weed differently.”
Aristocrat
Long and skinny joints rolled mostly for the aesthetic. While they can look impressive, they can be fiddly and difficult to smoke, especially if not rolled properly. Some aristocrats can reach up to a foot in length, with some reaching over 16 inches total! These joints are definitely not for the inexperienced roller or smoker, and they’re more of a display of skill than anything else.
“Why don’t we roll up an aristocrat as part of Misha’s birthday gift?”
Backroll
Also known as rolling inside out, the backroll is a European joint rolling technique that provides smokers with a slower, more even burn. This method also reduces the amount of paper used, which showcases the taste of the flower rather than that of the rolling paper itself. Though it can be tricky to master, some people find backrolling easier than traditional rolling. It’s worth trying out if you struggle with rolling joints.
“Your backrolled joints get better every time we hang out.”
Backwoods
Backwoods are a brand of machine-rolled cigars that are popular for blunt rolling. They are rolled using a whole tobacco leaf, and they come in a variety of flavors. While brittle and hard to roll, the size of the leaf allows for more product in your blunt while still maintaining a tight roll. The tobacco buzz of the leaf is an added incentive for many. Avid fans swear Backwoods blunts provide a more authentic experience. If you’re avoiding tobacco, it’s best not to smoke these, but don’t fret–you’ve got plenty of other options.
“I rolled my first Backwoods last night. It wasn’t great, but it got the job done.”
Bake Sale
Deriving from the existing term “baked,” meaning high, a bake sale often refers to a smoke session. Some argue that a bake sale should involve cannabis-laden baked goods, but opinions vary from person to person. Regardless of the meaning, participating in a bake sale means you will likely end up very, very stoned.
“Can you stop by the dispensary and pick up some supplies for a bake sale later?”
Baked
The warm, fuzzy feeling resulting from certain strains. A person who is baked might be giggly, red-eyed, and unwilling (or unable) to move from their spot on the couch. “Baked” is also very rarely used to describe being under the effects of alcohol, but as cannabis culture becomes more widespread, it has become more synonymous with being high.
“You were so baked after we rolled up that Backwoods last night!”
Blazed
The pleasant result of a cannabis high. The high itself varies depending on the strain, but it is generally positive and pleasurable. Sometimes being blazed is synonymous with the kinds of highs portrayed in media, where the stoner is slow, relaxed, and kind of dopey. However, “blazing” and “being blazed” often just refer to “getting high” and “being high” so it tends to depend on your region. The term appears to originate from the word “blaze,” which refers to something which burns brightly–in this case, the end of a joint or the bowl of a pipe as it’s being used.
“Since we’re getting blazed tonight, I stocked the pantry with tons of your favorite snacks.”
Proper cannabis storage
Because light, moisture, air, and temperature can all degrade the potency of marijuana, it’s important to store bud in a way that protects it from all of the above. Hence, keeping weed in a sandwich bag or foil in an underwear drawer is not the move. There are plenty of stash boxes on the market that offer secure, discreet weed-saving storage with odor protection to boot. Optimal storage is typically glass or ceramic with an air-tight seal. If storing multiple strains, it is also strongly advised to keep each strain separated from both other strains and smoking paraphernalia to maintain the flower’s integrity.
Pipe cleaners
For pipe and bong users, a clean instrument is a better instrument as it delivers a faster, smoother high with better flavor. A clean pipe or bong also helps conserve weed in addition to preventing exposure to bacteria. Not changing that bong water is a recipe for infection disaster, Yo. Be sure to clean the pipe/bong after each use or at least weekly. To help clear built-up residue, use pipe cleaners. Yes, they are actually for cleaning pipes, not just elementary school-level art projects.
Torch lighter
A cigarette lighter or a book of matches will light your flower just fine, but a torch delivers distinct benefits. A torch light provides a perfect, even burn. It also quickly fires up your smoke session if you happen to be outside in windy or breezy weather.
Post-smoke toiletries
Those stoners who don’t appreciate smelling like weed or suffering from bloodshot eyes after the fact should keep air freshener (or cologne/perfume) and eye drops on hand. Breath freshener relieves the old smoke mouth while hand sanitizer cleanses the digits leaving you with an overall clean, respectable presentation no matter how high you just got.
A stoner is someone who loves cannabis and lives it everyday, with good vibes and appreciation for this green sticky medicine we bring smoke to those in need and we always have a lighter on us or nearby. <3 peace and love haha cheers.
