Potent strains of kush

The origins of the Kush cannabis family are rooted in the Hindu-Kush Mountains that meander through the borders of modern day Afghanistan and Pakistan. Thousands of years, possibly tens of thousands of years ago man was growing Kush here.

Smugglers transported the prized landrace heavy duty Mountain Kush seeds out of the region throughout the 1970’s. Both American and European strain hunters following the “hippie trail” crossed paths with the Kush on their travels. We’ve succinctly filled you in on the What, Where and When.

Who? Is hotly debated with too many tall tales to know for sure which individuals are owed the credit for bringing ancient Kush genetics to the West. However, we can be certain that it happened just in time. In 1979 the former Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and so began a terrible trend. Ever since War and conflict have plagued the whole Middle-East.

Civilian Kush seed hunting expeditions have all but ceased. Fortunately, breeders from the US and Europe have been cultivating, hybridising and refining vintage Kush genetics for close to 50 years now.

Og Kush

One strain sits on the Kush throne and in our opinion, the queen of all Kush varieties is the OG Kush. Reputedly a mix of Chemdawg, Lemon Thai and Pakistani Kush the OG Kush is undoubtedly connoisseur cannabis.

20%+ THC levels from neon green gooey buds that hit you like a one-two punch combo of uplifting sativa followed by narcotic indica effects have made OG Kush a living legend. Critically acclaimed and beloved by ordinary decent stoners everywhere this Kush is a cut above the rest. Believe the hype. Gooble, Gobble, Gooble, Gobble. One of us! Grow some OG Kush.

Critical Kush

If you really can’t get enough of that wonderful Kandy Kush? Then you need to get a pack of Critical Kush right away. Crossing the hottest Kush strain, OG Kush with the mega productive commercial growers favourite Critical bulks up yields without diminishing 20%+ THC potency. Critical Kush is a fast flowering compact indica hybrid. Ideally suited to beginner growers and connoisseurs.

In just 60 days of bloom or less this strain can perform to the highest standards with minimal maintenance required. Highly responsive to bloom boosters and tolerant of high doses of fertiliser. Critical Kush can yield in excess of 500g/m² indoors. Outdoors in a sunny spot with large containers and some privacy dense bushes 1m-1.5m in height can produce 500g or more.

 Master Kush

For the grower that loves classic Kush and hates to let winning genetics slip through their fingers. We recommend the Master Kush. This old school hybrid of Hindu Kush and Skunk #1 is a pleasure to crop and a really nice strain to clone with a high success rate.

Selecting a mother plant from Master Kush couldn’t be easier as she is very stable and expresses little variation even when grown from seed. Most Master Kush will stay short and stocky and race to harvest in 8-9 weeks.

Watch out for mold in high humidity environments. Colas will swell significantly in the final weeks of flowering. Lesser known as a stealth Kush due to her more subtle growing odour. A low-profile Kush in more ways than one. Delivering a mellow physical effect rather than a heavy couchlock.

Cookies Gelato

Combining the sugary sensations of Girl Scout Cookies and Gelato, the aptly named Cookies Gelato is a recent entry on this list and has more than earned its spot. You see, besides inheriting a sweet flavour and aroma from its parent strains, it’s got a lot of THC; around 28%, to be exact. Bringing about a euphoric rush with a relaxing touch, this hybrid makes sure you don’t go too deep in one direction, even if you’re headed for the stars. Needless to say, this might not be for you if you’re a novice smoker, but those with a bit of a tolerance will have an unforgettable time with this luxury treat.

Green Gelato

In California alone, there are different regions competing to cultivate the best cannabis. Out of the San Francisco Bay Area comes Green Gelato, a must-try for any cannabis-lover with a sweet tooth. The parent plants Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint Cookies are already famous for their sweet flavour and strong high. Combining them has led to something even sweeter, with a THC content passing 25% to boot. This intoxicating mix of fruity tones, sharp mint, spicy kush, and warm cookie flavour has to be tasted to be believed. Expect an uplifting high that chills your body out with arresting couch-lock.

Hulkberry

Colorado was among the first states in the US to legalize recreational marijuana. The first-movers of that state have been cultivating some of the most impressive hybrids known to humanity. A particular standout is already taking dispensaries by storm, and has made its way to Europe and beyond. HulkBerry has attained cult status in a short amount of time following its success at the 2014 High Times Cannabis Cup. It was unmistakable how strong this strain was, with a THC content surpassing 28%. The breeding of OG Kush with Strawberry Diesel means a powerful mix of indica and sativa effects will accompany a delicious fruity taste.

We often think of progress in terms of technology — faster wi-fi, increased storage capacity, higher pixel count, smaller processors. And though it hasn’t enjoyed the explosion of growth that the tech sector has, improvements in the marijuana industry have been made.

Sure, there has been a good deal of couch-sitting — we are dealing with marijuana, after all — and the industry probably hasn’t come as far as it could have if it didn’t revolve around psychotropics, but advancements in weed have abounded since little Johnny first became a pothead.

The most significant improvement over the course of the last 45 years has been the dramatic increase in THC content.

The differences between the marijuana of yesteryear and the marijuana of today are fairly significant, but the bottom line is that average THC content has increased 100% (in some cases, more than 700%) since the 1970s.

Back then, the average THC content hovered around 3.5 percent. Today, marijuana THC content averages more than 7 percent, but modern growing techniques can push it as high as 27 percent.

That’s quite an improvement, don’t you think? Who cares about faster Wi-Fi? Give me some ganja with 27 percent THC and I’ll be just fine!

So in the spirit of progress, we’ve put together a list of the 20 strongest weed strains available today that illustrate just how far Mary Jane has come. Enjoy.

  1. Gorilla Glue #4 is the strongest weed strain I’ve ever smoked : I packed a bowl with about .75, cleared it, went upstairs and spent the next hour unable to move off my bed whilst listening to Led Zeppelin just feeling the music on a level I’ve not been able to replicate since. It was almost psychedelic, truly the most chonged I’ve ever been from a relatively small amount of bud.
