Buying a new bong can be expensive. Fortunately, you can make your own bong at home using some cheap, basic supplies! With the right tools and a little bit of time on your hands, you’ll have a fully functioning bong in no time.Fill up a plastic bottle ¼ of the way with water. Any kind of plastic bottle will work, but keep in mind that the larger the bottle is, the bigger the bong hits will be. Don’t worry if you don’t have the cap to the bottle—you won’t need it!
The water you’re putting in the bottle is what the smoke will filter through when you’re smoking the bong.Poke a hole just below the neck of the water bottle to make the carb. The carb is the hole you’ll cover with your finger at first and then let go of so you can inhale the smoke in the bottle. Make the hole large enough for air to easily flow through it, but not so big that you won’t be able to cover it with your finger.
You can use any sharp tool to make the hole, like a pen, a knife, or a straightened out paperclip. Be careful that you don’t cut yourself or make the hole too big.
Make the hole about the same width as a pen. If it’s any smaller, you may have a hard time pushing the downstem through, and if it’s any larger, the downstem may be too loose.Use a highlighter and foil to fashion a downstem for the bong. To make the downstem, empty the contents of a highlighter so you’re left with just the hollow plastic tube. You may need to use scissors or pliers to pull the highlighter apart. Then, tear off a small piece of aluminum foil and wrap it around the wide end of the plastic tube. Press the center of the foil down into the tube to make the bowl and poke tiny holes in it so the smoke can get through.
If you already have a downstem, you can use that with your plastic bottle bong instead.Push the open end of the downstem through the bottom hole you made. Angle the downstem downward so the open end inside of the bottle is submerged in the water. When you’re finished inserting the downstem, the bowl should be angled upward on the outside of the bottle.
If you’re having trouble fitting the downstem through the hole, make the hole a little bigger and try again. Be careful not to make the hole too big or the downstem will be too loose.Pack the bowl and try out your new bong. To use your plastic bottle bong, start by covering the carb—the hole you made at the top of the bottle—with your finger. Then, place your mouth on the mouthpiece and light the bowl with a lighter. As you’re lighting the bowl, inhale slowly through your mouth. Once the bottle is full of smoke, take your finger off the carb and breathe the smoke in.
If you have the cap to the bottle and you aren’t able to inhale all of the smoke, just put the cap on to trap the leftover smoke inside. Then, when you’re ready for more, take the cap off and breathe in the rest of the smoke.
The iBong, or the Apple Bong
Who knew you could even get bongs at Apple. Just kidding. The homemade apple bong (although it’s more of a pipe) is a true classic. And the best part is that this method is cheap and easy to do: it requires only an apple, or any other fruit or vegetable, and a pencil, plus it adds good flavor.

The first step is getting a ripe apple and removing the stem. Stick the pencil, or any pointy object, through the top until you reach the center of soon to be apple bong to create your downstem and bowl.

Now with the same pencil stick a hole through the side of the apple, also until you reach the center, aiming to make both holes meet in the middle. This one will be your carburetor. Lastly, make a hole by the front of the apple, also meeting the other two holes in the middle, this will act as the tube. Extra Tips: Apple pipes are great, yes, but don’t get stuck only with apples though! You can use many types of fruitsand vegetables as a bong, such as bananas, pumpkins, pineapples, cucumbers and even combine more than one together, get creative!
Mason Jar Bong
We know jars are the favorite object for DIY crafts of the decade so of course, we had to include them in this list. This is a good method for those who are feeling inspired and want to put dedication to build a homemade bong that lasts.
Building a Mason Jar Bong
The first thing you’ll need to do is take any jar you find at home and cut three holes into the lid, two of them equally sized and a smaller one for the carb.
Then, grab any tubes you find at home, or old markers as we did in the plastic bottle method, and stick them into the jar through the bigger holes. Keep in mind one of the tubes should be long enough to be covered by the water in order to work as the downstem.

If you’re feeling inspired, then purchase a couple of transparent tubes to turn your homemade bong into a professional-looking bong. Make sure the holes and the tubes resemble in size.Extra points: to avoid air from sneaking out through the lid’s holes you can also add some rubber grommets aroundthe tubes to seal the air properly.
Finally, you’ll need to build a bowl on the edge of the longer tube. You can do this the easy way, by covering it with aluminum foil, or you can attach a metal bottle cap to it -which you could get from olive oil bottles, alcoholic bottles, or anything that comes useful- then add some small holes inside to let the smoke through.

You can make an apple joint pipe where you put a 1cm hole (mouth piece and carb) through the entire apple then a 50mm hole (joint holder) at around 45 degrees which joins to the main tube, stick the joint in and puff away, or you can make an apple steamroller, put a 1-2cm whole right through the whole apple the carve out a fairly shallow bowl vertical to the original tube, poke a whole in the bowl with a screwdriver, push your weed in and smoke.
